In the Junior School, learning is broad, deep and powerful, and students are encouraged to be curious, take risks and make connections through questioning and discovery.

In our Junior School, we ignite the spark of creativity with a vibrant curriculum that fuels the imagination of curious minds.

Our students are inquisitive learners and revel in joyful learning. They ask big questions, seek discovery, and are empathetic, thoughtful, and courageous.

Here, students love learning and are empowered by our community to pursue intellectual growth.

Why the Junior School?

Our Deputy Principal and Head of Junior School, Shannon O'Dwyer, sums it up best:

"Joy is not specifically written in my job description. Joy is not written in the curriculum. And yet, joy is the very fabric of the Junior School."

Enrolling in Years 5 - 6

Many families interested in starting in the Senior School at HVGS, are making the decision to start their HVGS learning journey earlier in Year 5 or Year 6.

There are many reasons why families opt to change schools during Stage 3. Some may seek a more globally minded education or feel their child's current school no longer meets their expectations. Others wish to secure a place at HVGS for Year 7, where strong enrolment demand makes early entry a strategic choice.

At Hunter Valley Grammar School, this trend highlights the value families place on our supportive environment and forward-thinking education, ensuring a smooth transition into Senior School.

Why join in Year 5 and Year 6

Starting in Year 5 or Year 5 at Hunter Valley Grammar School signals a very exciting time in your child’s schooling. Data suggests that Year 5 and Year 6 enrolment has grown by almost 14% in independent schools, and the trend shows that these figures are increasing. Read our digital paper about this growing trend.

Learning and Teaching

The Curriculum

The International Baccalaureate (IB) Primary Years Programme (PYP) cultivates globally-minded learners by inspiring curiosity, empathy, and a commitment to making a positive difference in the world.

The PYP integrates the Australian curriculum with six transdisciplinary themes, connecting learning across subjects. Here, students experience a rich, holistic education. We like to think that we're preparing students not just for the classroom, but for life.
