HVGS students are on a learning journey that prepares them for the future while engaging their passions and empowering them to believe that as global citizens, they can, and will make a difference.
Learning and Teaching at HVGS
Principles of Learning and Teaching
As an International Baccalaureate (IB) school, we take a holistic, student-centered approach to learning that balances academic rigor with personal development.
To articulate our vision for learners, we’ve crafted a dynamic set of guiding Principles of Learning and Teaching that drive our vision for exceptional education.
We promote
Student-centered learning
Our IB Programmes put students at the centre of their learning, making education meaningful now and for the future.
We cultivate a culture of inquiry, encouraging students to ask thoughtful questions, think critically, and engage deeply. Learning here is challenging and globally relevant.
We cultivate
Global-minded perspectives
HVGS students are encouraged to think local and global. Through our focus on service learning, students discover their impact and champion causes that matter to them.
Our hope is that students possess a passion for justice and equality. That they learn to think critically and be creative and resilient.Rebecca Butterworth Principal
We value
Experiential learning
Experience is the best teacher. That’s why we immerse students in hands-on learning through a range of experiences including our Education Outside the Classroom Program, international trips, excursions and on-campus incursions,. These opportunities deepen understanding and enrich learning.
We offer
Diverse learning pathways
The final years of school open doors to endless possibilities. HVGS offers three pathways to graduation: the Higher School Certificate (HSC), the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme, and the IB Career-related Programme (IBCP).
Each pathway prepares students for university, the workforce, or both.
We value
Intercultural learning
HVGS promotes intercultural learning through initiatives that foster global awareness and respect. Our curriculum explores global issues and perspectives, while all students up to Year 10 study an additional language, enhancing communication skills and cultural understanding.
We ensure
Inclusion and belonging for all
HVGS is a vibrant, inclusive community where every identity is celebrated. Each student and adult is valued and encouraged to be their authentic selves, while supporting those who may feel vulnerable. We ensure all learners have equal access to our enriching curriculum and co-curricular programs
