Alumni Profile: Mila Wawszkowicz

11 July 2025

From the basketball courts of Maitland to college stadiums in the United States, Mila Wawszkowicz’s journey has been anything but ordinary.

Beginning her time at HVGS in Year 10, Mila quickly became part of the school community, even while navigating life as a quieter student. Her deep passion for basketball, shaped by her family’s involvement with the Maitland Mustangs, proved to be a powerful driver of her personal and professional growth.

From HVGS to the U.S. College Courts

While still in Year 10, Mila began receiving interest from American college coaches, thanks to a state-level selection and her dad’s connections in the U.S. basketball scene.

Initially planning to study in Australia, Mila’s perspective shifted after a trip in March 2021 where she toured several Division 1 universities. The University of San Diego immediately felt like the right fit and shortly after returning home she committed to USD.

In June 2023, she moved to the U.S. to begin her collegiate journey. Playing basketball at this level brought unforgettable moments – none more powerful than stepping onto the court at Gonzaga University. Mila recalls being moved to tears by the crowd’s passion and the electric energy of the stadium: “It was so loud I couldn’t even hear my teammate next to me.”

Tough lessons and resilience

Adjusting to life in America wasn’t always easy. Mila openly shares her struggles with homesickness, the intensity of American coaching and learning to “adult” far from home, including breaking her foot just three weeks in and navigating the healthcare system on her own.

Despite the challenges, Mila developed resilience, independence and a global perspective. She also gained insight into the different dynamics of women’s basketball in the U.S. – from the high-pressure expectations to the camaraderie and friendships formed along the way.

"I had scans and was put in a boot before my parents even woke up because of the time difference. I just wanted a hug from Mum!"

A new chapter back home

In May 2024, Mila made the decision to return to Australia to focus on her academic path in finance at the University of Newcastle. She continues to play semi-professionally for the Maitland Mustangs in the NBL1 league – balancing her long-term goals with her ongoing love for the game.

Looking back on HVGS, Mila fondly reflects on her years at HVGS, cherishing the friendships and memories she made. Her advice to current students: “Take risks, chase your goals, and don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone.” Words of wisdom for aspiring athletes

For young girls dreaming of playing college basketball, Mila offers this heartfelt advice: “Do it and give it your best shot. The highs are really high, and the lows can be low, but the friendships are unbelievable.

It’s the best decision I’ve made – even though it wasn’t the path for me long-term. And don’t take it too seriously – basketball is a children’s game that I was lucky enough to play for a free degree. No matter how high-pressure it feels, remember the inner child in you just having fun with friends.”

Mila’s story is a powerful reminder that life’s journey isn’t always linear – and that success often lies in the lessons, friendships, and growth we find along the way.
