The MYP fosters intellectual growth by encouraging students to connect their academic learning to real-world contexts. The MYP teaches for understanding.
The IB Middle Years Programme (MYP) is a globally recognised framework for HVGS students in Years 7 - 10 that integrates with the Australian Curriculum.
Here's five reasons why HVGS chooses the MYP for students in Years 7 - 10:
- Seamless Continuum of Learning
- Development of Conceptual Understanding
- Focus on Ethical Decision-Making
- Emphasis on 'Learning How to Learn'
- Engagement in Interdisciplinary and Service Learning

Seamless Continuum of Learning
The MYP serves as a bridge between primary education and preparation for future academic pursuits. It is designed to meet the developmental needs of each Stage and equips students with a strong foundation, preparing them for the next stage in their academic journey.
Structuring Knowledge
Development of Conceptual Learning
In the MYP, concepts are key to helping students think beyond individual subjects.
Big ideas help them connect different subjects and show how learning applies to real life. This approach builds essential skills for future success, both in and out of school.
Caring and Compassionate People
Ethical Decision-Making
The MYP encourages students to reflect on their values and actions, fostering a strong sense of personal responsibility and preparing them to make principled decisions in their academic and personal lives.
Approaches to Learning
Learning to learn
In the MYP, students build a broad range of skills known as Approaches to Learning (ATL). These include critical thinking, research, collaboration, communication, and self-management. Strengthening these skills helps students become self-directed and reflective learners, empowering them to take ownership of their learning and grow into confident, independent individuals.
Kind and compassionate people
Service Learning
The MYP features student-led projects that apply learning to real community needs, helping students develop responsibility and become caring, active citizens.
Years 7 - 10 Curriculum
In New South Wales, the Education Standards Authority (NESA) is responsible for developing and overseeing the school curriculum. For students in Years 7 - 10, learning is structured around eight Key Learning Areas (KLAs).
Below, you’ll find how these eight NESA Learning Areas align with the subject groups of the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme (MYP), showing the connections between state curriculum requirements and our global learning framework.

Language Learning
Language Learning at HVGS
Language learning in the MYP supports your child’s thinking skills, cultural awareness, and global outlook. Studying other languages improves communication, builds empathy, and broadens perspectives. It also opens up a whole world of new possibilities.

In Year 10, students bring their interests to life through the Personal Project, which is a signature MYP experience that begins in Year 9 and culminates in the Personal Project Showcase in Year 10. It is their opportunity to explore what matters to them, demonstrate their learning journey, apply the ATL skills and celebrate their growth as independent learners.
The 2025 Showcase featured an inspiring range of projects: from handcrafted guitars and original artworks to custom ute trays, recycled armoires, innovative circuitry, and even a speed boat!
