Alumni Profile: Patrick McMahon
After graduating from HVGS in 2017, Patrick McMahon dove headfirst into the music industry – gigging solo every weekend while completing a Bachelor of Music.
Performing regularly at venues like Lizotte’s, Pat quickly began collaborating with some of Australia’s most iconic artists, including Glenn Shorrock (Little River Band), Joe Camilleri (The Black Sorrows), Dave Gleeson (The Screaming Jets, The Angels) and Rick Price. He has also supported afterparties for international acts such as Cold Chisel, The Killers, The Corrs and Andrea Bocelli.
A milestone moment in Nashville
Following years of live performance and songwriting, Pat recently achieved a major milestone – the release of his debut single, “Memphis” – a nostalgic, soul-inspired track co-written and produced in Nashville with ARIA Award-winning artist, Rick Price.
Where the love of music began
Pat’s love of music started early. While most of his peers were into pop icons, he found inspiration in legends like Carole King and Billy Joel.
But it wasn’t until moving to HVGS in Year 7 that he truly fell in love with playing.
A pivotal moment came when his music teacher, the late Jacob Neale, encouraged him to explore jazz and rock ’n’ roll piano. In Year 12, with a nudge from HVGS music teacher Mr Gidney, Patrick discovered his voice and never looked back.
“HVGS gave me the space, support and opportunities to perform. Those experiences, especially in Stage Band, were invaluable. I still jam with a few of those guys today.”
Advice for aspiring musicians
Pat’s advice to current students?
“Connections are everything. Surround yourself with people doing what you want to do, ask questions, and get outside your comfort zone. Playing music with others is one of the best ways to grow.”
What’s next for Pat
Now, Pat is preparing to release a string of original songs every 8-10 weeks, with his next single set to drop in early September. He’s currently assembling an 8-piece band to bring his music to life on stage and is excited to take his sound to a new level.
In addition to his regular weekend gigs, Pat has some major shows lined up!
He’ll be supporting Rick Price on his Australian tour at QIRKZ in the Hunter on October 10 and joining Glenn Shorrock for two shows in Sydney on October 17 and 18.
He’ll also headline his own show at the Stag and Hunter Hotel in Newcastle in November – a milestone he’s eagerly looking forward to.
